While People may have gone the pretty conventional route in naming Julia Robert’s the “World’s Most Beautiful Woman” for 2017 — her fifth time receiving the honor — the magazine stepped outside the box in other ways with the remaining stars on the annual list.
For starters, all three female leads from “This is Us” have made the list, with the magazine making a statement about beauty coming in all sizes with the inclusion of Chrissy Metz alongside Mandy Moore and one of our personal faves, Susan Kelechi Watson.
Other brown beauties recognized in the issue which hits newsstands Friday are Viola Davis, Taraji P. Henson, and Oprah Winfrey.
As part of her feature, Watson wrote a letter to her younger self acknowledging the inspiring women in her life whom she’s lost over the years. Of her aunt Saskea who died from lupus, she wrote:
“Oh man, she was a beauty. I mean it would take my breath away. The caramel of her skin, the almond shape of her eyes, her perfect figure and raspy voice was everything you looked up to. She was a presence — a resilient, defiant presence. She was beautiful. And even near the end, when the disease had so ravaged her body that no part of her looked as it had before, you’ll sit with her for a while, hear her speak of love and life and she’ll ask you how you’re doing with no thought of herself, and you’ll learn that beauty resonates from the inside out. Nothing can steal your beauty if you don’t let it. You’ll take this with you always.”
